Does my dog or cat have food allergies?
Unfortunately, there are no blood tests or other tests to find out if your dog or cat has developed a food allergy. What you can do instead is to look for the symptoms. Allergy in dogs manifests itself as a skin disease, the most common symptom in dogs that develop allergies is itching in e.g. face, ears and groin, even recurrent ear infections, paw problems and gastrointestinal problems can be caused by allergies.
Also in cats food-allergies manifest as skin problems, the most common symptom for cats with food allergies is itching and other skin conditions, usually located on the cat’s head or neck. Problems such as vomiting, diarrhea and stress can also occur separately or together with itching and other skin conditions in cats with food-allergies.
Elimination diet – try another meal
If you suspect that your dog or cat has developed a food allergy, after eliminating other causes of the symptoms such as parasites or skin infections, you can, in consultation with a veterinarian, test a so-called elimination diet.
In an elimination diet for dogs, the dog may eat a special diet for about two months. Then the dog is allowed to eat his usual diet again. If the dog’s problems became better during his special diet, and then worse again in his usual diet, one can conclude that the dog was allergic to something in his usual diet.
Our food normally contains only one animal, protein as well as fat, which makes it suitable as the exclusion diet because you can then exclude other animal products that your dog normally eats.
Even if a food-allergy is suspected in cats, an elimination diet can be tested where the cat is only allowed to eat sources of protein and carbohydrate that it has not previously gained through its normal diet.
